How to buy cigars as a gift: 5 tips to choosing a quality cigar

Graduations, Father’s day and weddings are coming up! Is there a cigar aficionado on your gift list? Wondering how to choose a decent cigar for a friend or loved one?

Even if you know nothing about cigars or choosing a good cigar, just learning a few basics can help you sniff out (sometimes literally) a good cigar to give to a friend.

Fortunately, cigars have now entered the mainstream. Once the symbol of the rich and powerful, it’s easier than ever for just about anyone to purchase a good cigar. Of course, you probably won’t be able to buy your friend a box of top-tier Cuban cigars, but you can definitely buy them a good quality cigar that will put a smile on their face.

First, visit your local tobacconist or specialty smoke shop for the best quality and widest selection. Avoid ‘drugstore’ cigars. Although they may be inexpensive and convenient to purchase, drugstore cigars are usually filled with preservatives and generally of poorer quality. They may contain, at minimum, saltpeter, paper, glycerin, and other preservatives and irritants. You should make sure that the cigars you purchase are made of 100% tobacco. If you have any questions regarding the cigars ingredients, ask the salesperson. An experienced and knowledgeable sales clerk will be able to tell you extensive information about the ingredients.

Your local tobacco shop is a good place to shop because you will generally be allowed to smell and touch the cigars.

  1. Squeeze the cigar gently. A good quality cigar will give a little when squeezed. The cigar should be firm, with no excessively soft or hard spots. Never buy a lumpy cigar.
  2. If you notice any drying or discoloration on the wrapper, do not buy it. Ideally, the wrapper should be tight and smooth.
  3. Inspect the color of the tobacco to make sure it is even. Do this by inspecting the end of the cigar. Some color variation is normal, but if the color changes abruptly, chances are the cigar was not rolled properly. A cigar that is not rolled properly may result in an uneven burning and unpleasant odors.
  4. If you’re not sure how much your friend smokes, choose a longer cigar. Longer cigars tend to have a ‘cooler’ taste-an excellent choice for beginners.
  5. If you know your friend is an experienced and regular smoker, choose a cigar that is greater in diameter. These cigars tend to have a richer flavor that experienced smokers will appreciate.

Marriage Gift Ideas

A Wedding Basket is a Perfect Marriage Gift Idea

Weddings are a happy time for everyone involved and the bride and the groom are probably ecstatic for the coming day to arrive so they can say “I Do” to each other! When it comes to the wedding reception, many people have much more fun because they are able to unwind and relax. Gifts galore await the bride and the groom at the wedding reception and if you have ever purchased any sort of marriage gift then you have also probably spent countless hours trying to think of what to get the bride and the groom. If you have never thought of giving them a marriage gift basket, though, these can be awesome gifts for any couple.

There are all sorts of ways in which someone can be creative with their marriage gift basket as well. From making the actual basket by themselves to making sure that they put in everything special into the basket, marriage gift baskets are good presents to give that show your love and support.

A few of the items that you may want to include with the marriage gift basket are bath products. Not only are bath products usually well received but there are a plethora of options out there as well. For example, bubble bath is actually something that many couples enjoy because they’ll be able to use together. If you are going to include bubble bath in your marriage gift, though, a few of the other bath products that you must include are bath towels, wash cloths, and possibly even a few bars of soap.

Aside from bath products, though, there are plenty of other things to include with a marriage gift basket. For starters, how about putting in some things that they’ll need for their kitchen? Unless one or both of them owns a house with a fully-stocked kitchen chances are that they’ll need a few odds and ends to get them started. For example, spices and herbs, as well as coffee and teas are a good idea to include with the marriage gift basket. Considering, however, that spices, herbs, coffees, and teas should not be the only thing in a wedding gift basket, you could even go a few steps further to include some cooking utensils that they’ll probably need as well!

Many people might actually think that giving a marriage gift basket to a couple who has just celebrated their wedding ceremony, though, is too impersonal and is also distasteful. On the contrary, though, if you put a lot of thought into how the marriage gift basket will be presented and all of the products that you’ll place in the gift basket yourself it can be a truly special gift to give to the two people in love! Furthermore, chances are that the wedding couple will receive duplicate gift items anyway, so this way creating a wedding gift basket will ensure that your marriage gift is like no other gift they receive!

Barware and other items are a great choice for your marriage gift basket too.

guide to wine buying

Introduction to Wine Buying

Tips for Finding and Buying the Best Wine

When it comes to wine, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of different types to choose from. Determining what wine is best suited for you can be quite difficult if you are new to this the wine buying world. Here are 8 ways to buy the best wine possible.

Go to wine tasting events. This is a fantastic way to discover wines that you will enjoy without purchasing a whole bottle to find out if you like it. Many times wine cellars and wineries offer wine tasting as part of their tours. But in recent years, restaurants all over are having wine tastings for as little as $20 for a tasting of a variety of different wines.

Don’t be fooled into thinking only pricey wines are good. You should experiment with wines from all price points and ratings during your introduction to wine buying. Sticking with only expensive wines is a waste of money and could prevent you from finding the perfect wine for you. There are many wines that are tasty and are under $15.

If you are going to a party or a gathering, and you would like to bring wine, try to stick with something that is not too strong. Pinot Noir is a great choice for occasions like this, because it goes with most food. Also, if you find yourself easing into red wine during yor introduction to wine buying, Pinto Noir is a good choice as it is lighter than bolder cabernet or merlot.

Avoid wines on the eye-level shelf in your wine store or grocer. They are put at eye level for a reason. Often, these shelves will be “sold” to larger local wineries that can afford to put their wine in the prime shelf position. Smaller wineries that offer some great wine selections are usually relegated to the upper or lower shelves in the market. Don’t be afraid to experiment during your introduction to wine buying.

When thinking about a wine to pair with your meal, do not forget to include champagne and other sparkling wines while you are learning about wine buying. These wines don’t have to be relegated to special occasions. Keep in mind not all sparkling wines are sweet or dry; they can be anywhere in between. Usually these wines go well at the beginning of the meal. It pairs well with salty snacks and light dishes like cheeses and fruits. However, more and more, these have been paired with fried “comfort foods.” Think items like fried chicken or potato chips drizzled with blue cheese.

When shopping for wine, it’s great to seek advice from wine experts at your local wine store, but don’t let them sway you away from a wine you think you’d like to try. It’s best not to spend a small fortune on any wine until you have a solid understanding of what tastes good to you.

Sweet wines are referred to as dessert wine. They often have alcoholic additives in them to make the flavor even bolder. This creates a syrup-like wine which is great in small doses, one of the reasons it is served is smaller glasses. Pairing it with a savory dessert creates the best course of the meal, so try it at your next dinner party.

Unlike other wines, red wine needs a chance to breathe after opening. So, leave the bottle uncorked for about 30 minutes before your drink it. This gives the wine more time to interact with the oxygen in the air. If you are pressed for time (and willing to spend the money during your introduction to wine buying), pour the wine through an aerator and into a decanter so that it breathes properly first.

Becoming a wine expert doesn’t happen overnight. Follow the tips here and you are well on your way of becoming a wine connoisseur in your own right. Just remember to have fun during your wine education and be sure to drink responsibly.

How to Choose Products for Holiday Gift Baskets

If you didn’t get out in the Black Friday shopping recently, you may choose to shop for friends and family presents when it is less chaotic. Or perhaps you’ve been diligent throughout the year about buying gifts. If you find yourself stumped on a present for family and friends, you might consider a gift basket this holiday as your present. Photo credit: www.newscommonsense.com

Holiday gift baskets make terrific presents for friends, family and co-workers for several reasons. Perhaps you know of a small item that would be suitable for the gift recipient but not sure about what else to get them. A gift basket is a perfect present because it can be a mixture of items all wrapped in a nice bow. Or you can create a theme.

Selecting items for your Gift Baskets
If you are close with the gift recipient, you could include pictures of special celebrations, decorating the gift basket with shared memorabilia, as well as including things in the gift basket that would only be remembered by you and the other person. Or if you know the person like s a kind of animal, like elephants or owls, for example you could pack it full of those items. Think of a purse hook, blanket and picture frame.

Perhaps they’ve recently gotten into an appreciation for wine, beer or cocktails. A nice set of glasses for one of these would be a terrific idea. Also, adding a book on wine selection, beer making or cocktail recipes would be a perfect addition to one of these baskets. And lastly, see if you can get tickets to wine tasting, beer tour or cocktail class. These are prevalent in cities all over and shouldn’t be hard to find.

If they are a relatively new friend or acquaintance then chances are that you might not know enough about the person to get them what they truly want, which is another reason that should be added to the list of why gift baskets are good ideas! You could add chocolate and tea to such a gift basket. It is relatively inexpensive but a good bet something they will enjoy. They truly offer an in-between style present for the person you are buying it for.

All things considered, creating a gift basket for your family, friends, and acquaintances doesn’t have to be that difficult at all. However, it only takes a little bit of time and consideration before packing it all together to think about what type of gifts you’ll be including. Whether you’ll be including large gifts, like reading books or small electronic gadgets, or smaller gifts like electronic accessories or other type of small gifts is really dependent upon your relationship with the other person.

Wedding Season: Gifts Not To Give

Wedding season is a upon us. Did you know that about $7 billion dollars are spend each year on wedding gifts? Hard to believe it would be that much. Chances are, you have been invited to attend a wedding and are wondering what to give. Couples don’t always register, so it is difficult to know what to get. Here are a list of presents no couple wants to get.

Your Hobby – Perhaps your hobby is creating model airplanes or painting or sculpting. Whatever it is, unless this couple has expressed a deep interest in your hobby, chances are they don’t want it. So, just buy them something on their registry and play it safe.

Cash – while it is great to get money, there is so much going on the day of the wedding, it is easy for this to get misplaced. So, if you feel it necessary to give money, please do it in the form of a check.

Decor items – Pictures or items that would decorate shelves are a very personal taste. Just because you happen to adore pink flamingos, doesn’t mean the happy couple does. So, leave your personal taste out of gift giving.

In today’s times, many couples have had a long time of single living. This means they’ve already acquired toasters, coffee machines, and pots and pans. So, again, unless they’ve put it on their registry, these regular day-to-day use items are more than likely not what they want. In fact, they are probably trying to downsize from having two of all these things to just one.

Remember, you want to give the bride and groom a wedding present that is useful and / or appreciated, not something they feel obligated to keep around. By keeping these tips in mind for selecting a wedding present, you are sure to buy them a wedding gift they value.

mother's day tea

Mother’s Day: Ideas to Celebrate Mom

Heads up: Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Year after year, moms are treated to a Mother’s Day brunch. But what if mom isn’t a huge fan of brunch? What if your mom would prefer another sort of celebration for Mother’s Day. Here are some ideas of fun things to do for your mom on her special day.

Treat mom to a cooking class. Cooking classes have popped up at many places other than schools. And they span many categories: seafood, vegetarian, Holidays, ethnic cuisines – you name it. Has your mother has expressed interest in a certain type of cooking style? If so, sign her up for a cooking class. Even better, sign both of you up for a fun couple of hours.

Tea time! When I was a kid, I used to come home from school to a house with a mom, grandmother and often times a couple aunties too. Around 3 pm, without fail, we would all have a cup of tea. Why not rekindle this special time and make an appointment for tea at a fancy tea house and be waited on?

Is your mom and wine lover? Why not look into wine pairing dinners around the area (there’s always one going on somewhere) and book one at a restaurant your mother enjoys or would like to visit?

Has it been a while since your mom got all dressed up and went out for cocktails? Why not plan an outing to a fancy cocktail bar or speakeasy (they’re springing up all over) and have a lovely evening?

The best gift is you. As we get older, we get busy with our own lives. Work, friends, and our own kids supersede making time for our parents. It would be a treat for mom if you were to set aside a day or even just an afternoon to spend with your mom. Get takeout from her favorite cafe and enjoy a relaxing lunch. After that, take her to a movie, or help her with stuff around the house.

And don’t forget, just because the day is “Mother’s Day” that doesn’t mean it has to be only your mother you celebrate. There are probably a number of women who have contributed to making your life better through the years. Don’t forget these women on Mother’s Day.
